CARY, N.C. – The Thomas Jefferson University baseball team (3-7) finished its trip to the DII Challenge vs. Cancer with a 2-1 victory over Franklin Pierce (5-7) on Sunday. The Rams went 2-1 on the weekend.
The Ravens pushed the first run across in the second with a sacrifice fly. After recording just one baserunner through the first three frames, the Rams broke through in the fourth. Juniors CJ Goodz and Efrain Santiago hit back-to-back doubles to even the score at one.
After surrendering the run, junior Gunnar Hayes locked in on the mound for Jefferson, allowing just one baserunner over the next five innings and retiring the last 14 batters he faced. The Rams took the lead in the eighth with Santiago knocking in freshman Alex Gonzalez with a base hit. Senior Brett Chupka came on for the last two innings and finished it out for the save.
Jefferson hosts Gannon for its home opener on Saturday, March 14. First pitch is at 12 p.m.
