Philadelphia, PA- The Philadelphia University men's basketball team (11-8, 6-4 CACC) fended off the Caldwell College Cougars (7-12, 4-7 CACC) in an overtime match Saturday afternoon at the Gallagher Athletic Center, 72-65. The drive to victory was led by PhilaU junior center Temi Adebayo who netted 18 points alongside eight rebounds and six blocks.
The Rams held off the Cougars shooting 46%- CC's 33% from the field and outshot them from downtown 38%- CC's 25%. Derrick Ross led CC with 18 points.
CC controlled much of the first half but a pair of foul shots by Francisco would tie the match and seconds later Connolly hit a three-pointer to give PhilaU the lead 24-21 at 7:40. Adebayo added a jumper to put the Rams up by nine, their largest lead of the match at 3:29.
PhilaU inched ahead 34-33 at halftime.
CC was the first to strike in the second half with a layup by Nik Otovic to give them a 35-34 lead. A monstrous dunk from Adebayo at 3:55 tied the match at 57's and brought fans at the Gallagher Center to their feet.
Adebayo's two made free-throws would tie the game, 60-60, and send it into OT.
In extra time, a series of free throws by PhilaU's squad would preserve their lead as they held on for the eventual 72-65 home victory.
The Rams will host Holy Family University on Tuesday (2/8) in a CACC makeup game at 7:00 p.m. in the Gallagher Center.
