Philadelphia, PA- The #2 'South' seeded Philadelphia University men's basketball team (15-12, 10-7 CACC) fell in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) quarterfinals 64-54 to the #3 Chestnut Hill Griffins (12-15, 8-9 CACC) on Tuesday evening at the Gallagher Athletic Center.
PhilaU got a team-high effort from junior forward/guard Corey Francisco with 15 points and six boards.
PhilaU lost the battle at the free-throw line (11-21) and on the boards (33-38).
In the contest, the Rams led for most of the first half, as their biggest lead came at 15:11 (8-4) on two Francisco free-throws. At the 9:12 mark, two good free-throws by CHC's Dan Comas gave the Griffins a 12-11 lead they would secure through halftime. Comas added 15 points for CHC.
PhilaU trailed 26-24 at the break.
In the second half, PhilaU freshman guard Nick Christian (eight points, five assists) gave his squad a 26 all tie (19:49) on a made layup and Francisco added a three-ball on the next possession to give the Rams a brief lead (their only of the half).
It was all CHC after that, as the Griffins surged ahead by as many as 13 (55-42 at 6:46). Two made free-throws by PhilaU junior center Temi Adebayo would be the only points the Rams would score over the next three minutes as CHC pulled ahead for a 64-54 win. Adebayo was the only other PhilaU player in double digits, notching 10 points, 11 rebounds and seven blocks on the night.
