Philadelphia, PA- The duo of men's basketball Coach Herb Magee and women's basketball Coach Tom Shirley were honored in a pregame ceremony Thursday (11/18) to recognize them on achieving a combined 1,500 career wins.
The milestone was reached when Magee's squad took a 66-60 victory over St. Thomas Aquinas College on Tuesday (11/16).
As head of the men's basketball team, Coach Magee has earned 909 career wins, the most in NCAA history. Coach Shirley has led the PhilaU women's team to 593 victories and is ranked fourth among active Division II coaches in victories.
Magee and Shirley are the winningest combination in collegiate basketball today, second only to the University of Connecticut's Geno Auriemma and Jim Calhoun, who currently hold a combined 1,563 wins. Magee and Shirley have topped some of the best NCAA DI coaches, including Tennessee's Pat Summit/ Bruce Pearl (1,480) and UNC's Roy Williams and Sylvia Hatchell (1,445).
The two coaches have been at the University for a staggering 66 seasons combined. PhilaU President Dr. Stephen Spinelli personally congratulated the two men prior to the women's basketball game against Washington Adventist where Coach Shirley claimed win number 1,501.
