SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Philadelphia University men's basketball team suffered a 67-61 setback to American International College in the 2011 Basketball Hall of Fame Holiday Showcase at the MassMutual Center Friday afternoon.
Temi Adebayo led the Philadelphia (3-4) offense with 17 points. He added five rebounds and three blocked shots. Guard Jimmy Connolly netted 11 points. Forward Corey Francisco and guard Nick Schlitzer each had 10 points. Guard Nick Christian tied his career high with eight assists and had a career-best six steals.
American International (4-5) got 21 points from Spencer Braithwaite. David Campbell and Janek Schmidkunz contributed 11 points a piece. Brennan Cooper had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
The Rams shot 49.0 percent (24-of-49) from the field, while the Yellow Jackets hit 45.6 percent (26-of-57) of their shots. American International outrebounded Philadelphia, 36-23, including an 18-9 advantage on the offensive end.
Philadelphia went on a 12-2 run, capped by an Adebayo tip-in, to take a 15-6 lead with 13:01 left in the first half. Leading by two, the Rams scored seven straight points to regain a nine-point lead (30-21) with 3:34 left. Philadelphia led at the half, 33-26.
American International came back in the second half with a 9-0 run to knot the score at 46 with 10:43 remaining. Consecutive three-pointers by Schlitzer and Connolly stopped the run and put the Rams back in front 52-46. The Yellow Jackets went on a 15-4 run to grab a 61-56 lead with 2:01 to go, and then sealed the game by going 6-for-6 at the free throw line.
Philadelphia gets right back to work with a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match-up against Nyack on Saturday, Dec. 10 at the Gallagher Center. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
