PHILADELPHIA – Philadelphia University will honor its first-ever NCAA Tournament team, the 1957-58 men's basketball team, on the weekend of November 17 and 18.
The festivities begin on Saturday, Nov. 17 as the team will host a dinner event in the Kanbar Center. On Sunday, Nov. 18, the day begins with a team tour of the Philadelphia University campus at 12:30 p.m. The team has a pre-game reception in the Gallagher Center Hospitality Suite slated for 1 p.m., one hour before the Rams take on UMass-Lowell.
The 1957-58 team will become the 70th member, and second team, of the Philadelphia University Athletics Hall of Fame at halftime of the Rams/Riverhawks contest. The national championship winning 1970 men's basketball team was the first team inducted into the University's Hall of Fame.
University alums Lance Landgraf, Bob Malmgren, Duke Pototsky, Abe Salaman, and Bob Simons played an integral role in the planning of the weekend.
Under the direction of Philadelphia University Hall of Fame head coach and director of athletics Walter "Bucky" Harris, the Weavers put together a 17-7 season and won the Delaware Valley Conference for the fourth consecutive year. Textile's effort was strong enough to earn the team an at-large bid into the NCAA East Region College Division Tournament.
The Weavers were defeated by Wagner in the opening round of the regional, 94-77. In the regional third place game, Philadelphia suffered a 77-73 loss to Buffalo.
Senior Charles "Chick" Barnes, a member of the inaugural class of the Philadelphia University Athletics Hall of Fame, earned All-American recognition as he led the Weavers with 25.4 points per game. Freshman Bob Simons averaged 18.4 points for the team.
