Men's basketball defeats Kutztown 85-66 for second straight win

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Four Philadelphia University men's basketball players scored in double-figures as the Rams defeated host Kutztown, 85-66, in a non-conference contest Tuesday night in Keystone Arena.

Sophomore forward Derek Johnson (Conshohocken, Pa./Atlantic Christian) shot 7-of-14 from the field, 3-of-5 from 3-point range, to finish with a game-high 22 points for the Rams (4-2)—who have won back-to-back games for the first time this year.

Sophomore forward Peter Alexis (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Holy Redeemer) recorded his third double-double of the season as he contributed 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Senior guard Nick Christian (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) added 13 points and a season-high eight assists. Junior guard Nick Schlitzer (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville) poured in 12 points, while sophomore forward TJ Huggins (Alexandria, Va./TC Williams) added a season-high 10 points.

Philadelphia trailed 4-0 in the early going as Kutztown's Austin Beidelman and Tyler Brooks opens the game with good jumpers.

The Rams answered with eight straight points, five coming from Christian, to take an 8-4 lead with 17:05 left in the first half.

The Golden Bears (1-3) reduced the gap to one on three separate occasions, but the Rams never surrendered the lead.

Sophomore guard Andre Gibbs (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) connected on a lay-up with 3:57 left in the half to cap a 16-8 surge to push Philadelphia's lead to 34-25. Johnson gave the Rams their first double-digit lead (38-28) at the 2:03 mark with two good free throws.

With 3:32 left in the contest, Johnson made a lay-up to put Philadelphia ahead by a game-high 26 points (81-55).

Brooks led the Kutztown offense with 18 points. Josh Johnson and Tracy Peal both added 12 points.

The Rams finished the game shooting 30-of-60 (50.0 percent) from the field, 8-of-15 (53.3) from 3-point range. Kutztown made 26 of its 58 attempts (44.8 percent), 2-of-6 from behind the arc.

Philadelphia outrebounded Kutztown, 37-26.

Philadelphia returns to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play with a road game at Dominican (N.Y.) on Sunday, Dec. 1 at 1 p.m.
