Alexis' near triple-double helps men's basketball defeat Post in CACC Tournament, 84-55

PHILADELPHIA – Sophomore forward Peter Alexis (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Holy Redeemer) came up just one block shy of a triple-double with 24 points, 13 rebounds, and a career-high nine blocks to help the Philadelphia University men's basketball team defeat Post 84-55 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament quarterfinal round Saturday afternoon in the Gallagher Center.

The southern division champion Rams improve to 23-6 overall with the victory and move on to the semifinal round for the third straight year.

Philadelphia's next opponent is the University of the Sciences, a 65-62 winner at Dominican (N.Y.) on Saturday, and they will square off on Friday, March 7 at noon at Caldwell. The two teams each picked up a victory on their home floor during the regular season. Philadelphia was a 59-54 winner in the Gallagher Center on Jan. 18 and USciences was victorious in Bobby Morgan Arena by a 72-65 score on Feb. 18.

Post concludes its 2013-14 season with an 11-16 overall record.

Sophomore forward Derek Johnson (Conshohocken, Pa./Atlantic Christian) scored all of his 18 points in the first half to help the Rams take a 43-25 lead at the half.

Junior guard Nick Schlitzer (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville) added 15 points, while sophomore guard Andre Gibbs (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) scored 10 points.

The Rams hit their first eight shots of the contest to quickly jump out to a 16-4 lead on an Alexis bucket at the 15:07 mark. During that stretch, Post shot 2-of-7 from the floor.

After Post closed the gap to 16-8 on a pair of Effrin Ellison free throws, Philadelphia went on an 11-3 run to move in front by 16 (27-11) on a Johnson 3-pointer with 9:59 left in the half.

In the second half, the Rams kept the Eagles at bay by shooting 85.0 percent (17-of-20) at the free throw line. Philadelphia shot 44.0 percent (11-of-25) from the floor.

The Rams took a game-high 34-point lead (84-50) on a layup by sophomore forward TJ Huggins (Alexandria, Va./TC Williams) with 55 seconds left.

Ellison led the Eagles with 10 points. Jerry Cummings added nine points and five rebounds.

Philadelphia ended the game shooting 50.9 percent (27-of-53) from the field, while Post shot 33.3 percent (21-of-63). The Rams owned a 41-35 rebounds advantage.
