PHILADELPHIA – Guard Nick Schlitzer (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville) scored a game-high 17 points for the Philadelphia University men's basketball team in a 79-61 loss to La Salle in the Rams' final exhibition contest Monday night in Tom Gola Arena.
Forward Derek Johnson (Conshohocken, Pa./Atlantic Christian) contributed 16 points and eight rebounds for Philadelphia, who played their third Division I opponent in eight days. Forward TJ Huggins (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) added 11 points.
La Salle—who started the game with a 10-0 run and never looked back—got 16 points, five rebounds, and two steals from Jordan Price. Steve Zack had 13 points, five rebounds, and three blocks, while Amar Stukes scored 10 points.
After La Salle got off to its fast start, Philadelphia was able to close within eight points numerous times, the last time coming on an Alexis layup with 2:24 left in the half to make the score 33-25.
The Explorers opened the second half outscoring the Rams 18-6 to take a game-high 57-34 lead on a Zack 3-pointer at the 14:05 mark.
La Salle shot 50.0 percent (31-of-62) from the field, including 47.4 percent (9-of-19) from behind the arc. Philadelphia hit 30.6 percent (19-of-62) of its shot attempts.
Philadelphia opens the 2014-15 season with a road contest at Bentley on Friday, Nov. 14 at 8 p.m. in Waltham, Mass.
