PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University men's basketball team opened the 2015 portion of its schedule with a 55-48 victory over visiting Molloy Sunday afternoon in a non-conference contest played in the Gallagher Center.
Forward Peter Alexis (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Holy Redeemer) posted 16 points and 12 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season to lead the Rams (8-4). Guard Nick Schlitzer (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville) added 11 points, all in the final 20 minutes of play.
The Rams broke open a tight game by scoring 10 straight points during a 5:16 stretch to turn a one-point lead into a 17-6 cushion on a layup by forward TJ Huggins (Alexandria, Va./TC Williams) at the 9:28 mark.
After Molloy (7-5) trimmed to the Philadelphia advantage to 19-13 on a Jaylen Morris layup, the Rams responded with nine of the 10 points, capped by an Eric Long (Bronx, N.Y./Marianapolis Prep) bucket with 3:12 left in the half, to widen the gap to 28-14.
With the Rams up by eight, the Lions put together a 9-2 run during a 3:33 span to cut margin to 41-40, finished by a Matt McLeod fast break dunk at the 4:41 mark.
Guard Andre Gibbs (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) nailed a jumper and guard Jordan DiCicco (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) made two free throws to stop the rally and push the lead back up to five (45-40).
Brandon Williams, the Lions' leading scorer with 13 points, kept Molloy within striking distance with two straight baskets to bring the visitors back with a single point at 45-44.
Schlitzer sealed the game with a jumper with 1:50 left and followed it up with two made free throws with 50 seconds remaining to give the Rams a 49-44 advantage.
Philadelphia heads to Wilmington (Del.) for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference tilt on Wednesday, Jan. 7 at 6 p.m.
