PHILADELPHIA – Forward Peter Alexis (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Holy Redeemer) scored a game-high 28 points as the Philadelphia University men's basketball team led from start to finish in a 71-58 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory over Wilmington (Del.) Tuesday night in the Gallagher Center.
Philadelphia (17-4, 10-2 CACC)—now on a season-best seven-game winning streak—wasted little time flexing its muscle, opening the contest on a 12-2 run in the first 5:26. Alexis led the early charge with six points. The Rams' defense forced the Wildcats (6-15, 1-11 CACC) to shoot 1-of-10 from the floor.
After Wilmington's Drew Johnson trimmed the Philadelphia lead to eight, Eric Long (Bronx, N.Y./Marianapolis Prep) scored on the Rams next two trips down the floor—as part of a 13-point, six-rebound, five-block, and four-assist night—to extend the gap to a half-high 12 points (18-6) at the 12:10 mark.
For the rest of the half, Philadelphia's lead stayed between eight and 12 points. Alexis put back a Brendan Kilpatrick (Norristown, Pa./Malvern Prep) missed 3-point attempt with 1:26 left in the half to five Philadelphia a 33-21 lead at the break.
With the lead at eight, Mike Louden (Glen Mills, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) knocked down a long jumper with the shot clock winding down to spark a 13-5 run over a 4:44 span that would push the advantage to a game-high 16 points (56-40) with 6:36 to play. Kilpatrick led the way with five of his game-total 12 points.
The Rams' lead dipped below double figures to rest of the way when Drew Johnson made a layup with 1:35 remaining to make the score 62-53.
TJ Huggins (Alexandria, Va./TC Williams) contributed eight points, a game-high 12 rebounds, four assists, two blocks, and two steals to the victory.
Philadelphia turned in its best shooting performance of the season by hitting 58.0 percent (29-of-50) of its attempts, surpassing its 57.9 percent afternoon in its last game at Post on Jan. 22.
Johnson was Wilmington's leading scorer with 20 points. Tyaire Ponzo-Meek had 15 points and nine boards. The Wildcats finished the game shooting 35.3 percent (24-of-68) overall.
Philadelphia returns to the court on Saturday, Jan. 30 against Bloomfield in a CACC battle in the Gallagher Center at 4 p.m. The game will air on ESPN3.
