ANAHEIM, Calif. – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) men's basketball team (2-0) defeated the Point Loma Sea Lions (1-1) by a final of 67-64 at the Disney DII Tip-Off Classic from Santiago Canyon College in southern California on Saturday.
Senior Kaison Randolph played the hero in the win, making the game-winning shot, a three-pointer assisted by sophomore Kylan Guerra, with one second left. Randolph had already stepped up earlier in the game, hitting a three in the closing seconds of the first half to trim Point Loma's 10-point first half lead down to two at the break.
The senior finished with 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting including 4-of-8 from beyond the arc.
Freshman Alexander Gorton scored a game-high 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field while hitting 6-of-9 of his free throws. The freshman also grabbed 10 boards for his first double-double.
Guerra ended with night with eight points and four assists.
Sophomore Prince Hickson added eight points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists.
The Rams shot 45.1-percent from the field and 31.6% from deep.
The Rams found themselves down 10 points with under nine minutes to play in the first half. Jefferson chipped away at the deceit, trailing by only two at halftime following a three-pointer from Randolph with two second left in the opening period.
Jefferson tied it up early in the second half before going up by nine with a 47-36 lead with under 15 minutes in regulation. The Sea Lions then outscored the Rams 19-10 over the next 10-plus minutes to get within two at 57-55 with under four to play.
Guerra hit his only three of the game with 2:09 remaining to put the Rams back up five.
With Jefferson holding a 63-58 lead, Point Loma's Ziggy Satterthwaite scored six points with under a minute to play for the Sea Lions to tie the game with eight seconds.
Randolph hit the game-winning three-pointer with a second on the clock to give the Rams the win, 67-64.
Jefferson Men's Basketball closes out its opening weekend at the Disney DII Tip-Off Classic on Sunday, Nov. 6 when the Rams take on Palm Beach Atlantic at 4 p.m. ET (1 p.m. PT) from Santiago Canyon College in Orange, Calif.
