PHILADELPHIA – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) men's basketball team (10-5, 5-0 CACC) capped off the month of December with a 72-61 conference victory over the Goldey-Beacom Lightning (4-0, 2-2 CACC) on Saturday from the Gallagher Center.
The win helped Jefferson go 6-0 in the month while moving to 10-5 overall and 5-0 in conference play.
Senior Yevgen Sakhniuk recorded a double-double behind 14 points and a season and game-high 18 rebounds.
Freshman Alexander Gorton also scored 14 points as the fourth Ram in double figures.
Sophomore Kylan Guerra dished out a career and game-high nine assists while grabbing seven rebounds and hitting two shots and a free throw for five points.
Jefferson held a slight one-point edge at the end of the first half, 26-25. Bradanese accounted for 10 of the team's 26 while Sakhniuk had already grabbed 12 rebounds.
A six-point run late in the first half behind a three-point play from Sakhniuk and a three-pointer from Bradanese gave Jefferson a 24-17 advantage, which was their largest of the half.
Goldey-Beacom had a three-point play of their own before hitting a jumper with five seconds left to trim the edge down to one at the break.
In the second half, Jeffersoun found itself up double digits for the first time at 42-31 with 12:43 to play. Over the next six minutes, the Lightning outscored the Rams 16-6 to get back within one at 48-47 with 6:41 remaining.
The Rams went on a 11-3 run to get back up by nine with around three minutes, 59-50. Jefferson owned its largest lead with 40 seconds to play at 68-54 to put the game out of reach.
As a team, the Rams shot 24-of-51 for 47.1-percent in the 72-61 victory including 7-of-21 from three-point range. Jefferson outrebounded Goldey-Beacom 48-34 which turned into 17 second-chance points for the Rams.
Jefferson Men's Basketball returns to action on the road this Wednesday, Jan. 3 at Franklin Pierce for a nonconference matchup. Action begins at 1 p.m. from Rindge, N.H.
