PHILADELPHIA – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) men's basketball team (2-1) battled No. 4 Saint Anselm (3-0) before falling 79-75 in overtime on Saturday afternoon from the Gallagher Center in the Rams' home opener
Behind 63% shooting in the first half on 17-of-27 from the floor, the Rams led the No. 4 team in the country at halftime by double digits, 42-31. Jefferson led by as many as 15 in the opening period for their largest edge of the day. Junior Kylan Guerra connected on six of his eight shots in the first half with three three-pointers to lead all scorers with 17 at the break.
Over the first seven and a half minutes to the second half, Saint Anselm came back to outscore Jefferson 21-8 to even the score at 52-all. From there, the Rams hung tough with the Hawks as neither team led by more than five points for the final 13:33 in regulation.
A late foul with 16 second remaining led Guerra to make two free throws to tie the game, sending the game to overtime, 67-67.
Saint Anselm scored 12 points in OT to Jefferson's eight as the Hawks walked away with the win.
BY THE NUMBERS
-Guerra led the Rams with 24 points to go along with six rebounds and five assists.
-Junior Prince Hickson scored 20 on the day behind 7-of-9 shooting and 6-of-8 from the line. He also grabbed four rebounds, one assist and one block.
-Junior DeVaughn Mallory notched 16 points on the day behind 8-of-12 from the floor with six boards.
-Junior Josh Bradanese grabbed 10 boards to lead the squad and scored six with two blocks, an assist and a steal.
AS A TEAM
-Jefferson shot 50.8% (30-of-59) from the floor, 4-of-18 (22.2%) from three-point range and 11-of-15 (73.3%) from the line.
-Jefferson led rebounds, 34-33.
Jefferson Men's Basketball returns to action at home Tuesday, Nov. 20 against Millersville at 6 p.m. from the Gallagher Center.
