Rocha lifts men’s soccer to 1-0 Senior Day win over Post

PHILADELPHIA – For the first time this season, the Philadelphia University men's soccer team is in the win column in back-to-back games as Jason Rocha's (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Lower Moreland) 61st-minute goal gave the Rams a 1-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) over Post University Saturday afternoon on Ravenhill Field.

The victory improves Philadelphia's overall record to 4-8-1. More importantly, the Rams moved up into the eighth and final CACC playoff spot with a 3-5-1 conference record. Philadelphia still has three conference games left.

Prior to the match, Philadelphia held a Senior Day ceremony to honor the team's three senior student-athletes: Armando Canela (Marlborough, Mass./Marlborough), Paolo Martinez (Panama City, Panama/Colegio Brader), and Felipe Francato (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Nossa Senora Das Gracas).

After a scoreless first half in which Post outshot Philadelphia 8-2, Canela had an opportunity to put the Rams in front with a penalty kick three minutes into the second half as the Eagles were called for a hand ball in the penalty area. Canela beat keeper Jon Hanlon, who went the wrong way, with his kick, but hit the bottom of the crossbar.

At 50:50, Philadelphia keeper Eric Gutierrez (Croydon, Pa./Harry S. Truman) made a diving save at the right post on an Abdullah Bah header to keep Post off the board. It was the second of Gutirrez's two saves to record his second career shutout.

Rocha broke the tie with his third goal of 2016 off of a set piece on the right edge of the Post penalty area. Martinez hit the crossbar with his header after Canela played the ball into the box. Rocha was able to locate the loose ball in a crowd and ripped a shot from the right post into the upper left corner of the net.

Philadelphia's defense did the rest, holding Post (5-6-1, 4-3-2 CACC) to just two shot attempts—neither making their way on target.

Hanlon had two saves for Post.

Philadelphia will host Wilmington (Del.) in a CACC contest on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 3 p.m.
