PHILADELPHIA – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) men's soccer team (0-1) dropped its 2017 season opener to the West Chester Golden Rams (1-0) by a 1-0 final from Ravenhill Field on Thursday afternoon.
West Chester used an early first-half goal to take a one-goal lead which they held on to for the remainder of play. In the 19th minute, Cameron Peploe of WCU only had to beat the Jefferson keeper after Golden Rams teammate Brett Miller fed him the ball from midfield. Peploe took it inside the box and scored from close range.
Jefferson had chances a few minutes later in the 23rd minute when senior Valdo Jean-Baptiste (Guadeloupe, France / Daylight/Twilight) attempted a header which led to a corner from classmate Seiji Rose (Toulouse, France / Lycee Climatique et Sportif Pierre de Coubertin).
Rose crossed it into the box, leading to shots from sophomore Hunter Dyson (Broomall, Pa. / Marple Newtown) and junior Dillion Abraham (Diego Martin, Trinidad & Tobago / Fatima College ) that were thwarted by the WCU defense.
In the second half, Jefferson outshot West Chester, 8-3 including three shots on goal.
The best chance for the Rams came in the 84th minute when Dyson had a chance from inside the left side of the box, but put it high.
The Rams managed three shots toward the end of regulation but could not find the equalizer, falling 1-0.
In total, Jefferson led shots, 14-12, and shots on goal, 5-3, while corners were even at 5.
Senior keeper Ben Sauer (Bel Air, Md. / Perry Hall Christian) made five saves in goal across a full 90 minutes for the Rams.
Jefferson returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 6 when the Rams host Bloomsburg in a nonconference affair from Ravenhill Field. Play is set for 4 p.m.
