LAKEWOOD, N.J. – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) men's soccer team (15-5-1, No. 1 seed) fell to the Goldey-Beacom Lightning (16-4-1, No. 2 seed) in overtime of the 2017 CACC Championship on Sunday afternoon from Lakewood, N.J.
The Lightning scored in the 99th minute to win the conference championship in overtime and earn the CACC's bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Jefferson scored first in the championship match when senior and CACC Defensive Player of the Year Pedro Neto scored on a header as he played a free kick from fellow senior and CACC Player of the Year Seiji Rose in the 25th minute.
Goldey-Beacom responded in the 31st minute when Than Maguire headed in a corner kick from Nicolas Jaramillo.
Just like when the two teams met earlier in the regular season, 90 minutes was not enough.
Junior Dillon Abraham had a shot saved in the 93rd minute and the Rams got another chance with a corner kicks in the 94th and 96th, but could not capitalize on the opportunity.
Sophomore Musa Kalombe offered a shot in the 99th minute but was thwarted by the GBC keeper. The lightning then took the ball down the field to score. Chahin Aghrim played a crossed to Nicholas Ladeira who finished with his back heel.
Senior keeper Ben Sauer (L, 15-5-1) made five saves as he faced a total of 13 shots.
With Goldey-Beacom earning the conference's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament, the Rams will now have to wait until the at-large bids are announced on the NCAA.com Selection Show on Monday, Nov. 6 at 6:30 p.m.
