PHILADELPHIA – Sergei Cendo (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) finished in third place to lead the Philadelphia University to a fourth-place finish at the season-opening Philadelphia Metropolitan Championship on Saturday at Belmont Plateau.
Cendo's third-place 5-kilometer time of 17 minutes, 34.0 seconds, helped the Rams scored 114 points in the 11-team event.
In his first collegiate race, Zachary Samalonis (Blackwood, N.J./Highland Reg.) posted a 19th-place finish with a time of 18:47.4. Shane Fleming (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion) was 31st in the 90-runner field after completing the course in time of 20:19.9.
The final two scoring spots went to Ethan Fadale (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove) and Charles Griffin (Staten Island, N.Y./McKee)—competing in his first collegiate event—who finished in 34th and 35th, respectively. Fadale's 34th-place time was 20:25.6, while Griffin turned in a 20:28.0.
Greg Dawson (Springfield, Pa./Friends Central) crossed the finish line in 20:43.6 to come in 40th overall. Saaeddine Traboulsi (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) was 56th after completing the course in 22:45.1. Charles Barilo (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) rounded out the Philadelphia lineup with the 62nd-place time of 23:40.2.
Bloomfield won the team event with a score of 47, edging out Nyack who had 50 points. Nyack's Ian Mirtile crossed the finish line in first place after finishing the 5k course—which was shortened from 8k due to the heat—with a time of 17:13.2.
Philadelphia's next competition is the Division II Challenge, hosted by Kutztown University, on Saturday, Sept. 17.
