PHILADELPHIA – For the first time in over three decades, the Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) men's and women's cross country teams will host the NCAA Division II East Region Championship at Belmont Plateau. The event will be Saturday, November 9.
"I am excited to be named the race director and for Jefferson to be hosting the East Region Cross Country Championships on such a historic and challenging course as Belmont Plateau," said head men's and women's cross country coach Dave Thomas. "The last time Belmont Plateau served as the venue for the East Region Championship was in the mid-1980s with Philadelphia Textile serving as the host school."
The regional championship welcomes schools from the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, Northeast-10 Conference and East Coast Conference for a total of 38 institutions. The meet will include over 500 student-athletes across the men's and women's races.
"As a member of the NCAA Division II Championship Committee, I thought it was important for our institution to partake in hosting a regional championship," said Assistant Vice President of Athletics Tom Shirley. "Given the great work of Coach Thomas over the years, Jefferson is proud to support our cross country programs in this exciting weekend."
The East Region Championship serves as one of eight qualifying meets for the NCAA Division II Championship, which will be held on Saturday, November 23 in Sacramento, Calif. The top three teams from each regional meet advance to the national championships with 10 at-large teams also being selected.
In addition, the top two individuals who are not part of a qualifying team will advance with any additional individuals who finish in the top five, and who are not part of a qualifying team, also moving on. Eight at-large individuals will then be selected from across the country.
More information regarding the regional will be posted on JeffersonRams.com in the fall.
