PHILADELPHIA – Gianna Bliss (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville Area) recorded two hits for the Philadelphia University softball team in a 4-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) loss to visiting Holy Family on Sunday afternoon.
The Tigers (12-14-1, 6-6 CACC) opened the scored with a one-out rally in the second inning. Kristine Casey got it started with a base hit and went to second when Koreen Orozco was hit by a pitch. Holy Family got on the board on a Jennifer Trapp fielder's choice as Bliss' relay throw eluded Mollie Burrell (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area), allowed Casey to score.
Philadelphia (6-20-1, 4-10 CACC) had an opportunity to knot the game up when Bliss doubled to right field to start the third inning and moved up 60 feet on a Mariah Hans (Barrington, N.J./Haddon Heights) sacrifice bunt. However, the Rams were unable to get the ball out of the infield, stranding Bliss at third.
Holy Family tacked on an insurance run in the fourth on a two-out Orozco double that scored pinch runner Alyssa Cuderyo.
The Rams were able to put runners on first and second during their at-bat in the fourth with back-to-back one-out singles by Stephanie Pepper (Toms River, N.J./Central Regional) and Burrell. Philadelphia couldn't advance the runners any farther as the next two batters flew out and struck out to keep the score at 2-0.
In the fifth, the Tigers pushed two more runs across on a two-out double by Samantha Klem to increase their lead to 4-0.
Orozco scattered five hits and struck out four to earn the complete-game win for Holy Family. Pepper suffered the loss despite allowing just six hits and fanning four.
Monica Levins (Norristown, Pa./Norristown Area) also had a base hit for Philadelphia.
The Rams return to action with a non-conference doubleheader against West Chester on Monday, April 4 at 2:30 p.m.
