Softball falls in doubleheader at Dominican (N.Y.)

ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – A pair of big innings were the undoing of the Philadelphia University softball team as the Rams were swept by host Dominican (N.Y.) in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader on Sunday. The Chargers held off the Rams in game one, 5-3, and won game two, 4-1.

Mollie Burrell (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) provided one of the highlights of the nightcap as she joined the Rams' 100-hit club with a one-out single in the top of the second inning.

Shannon Haukap put Dominican (18-11-1, 10-3 CACC) ahead 4-0 with a two-out grand slam to center field in the second inning. The home run was one of two hits the Chargers got in the inning as Jillian Regan walked and Ariana Trembone got hit by a pitch.

The game remained 4-0 until the fourth when Philadelphia got a run on the board thanks to a Shannon Weaver (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) fielder's choice with the bases loaded. Burrell, who drew a one-out walk, scored on the play.

Philadelphia (6-24-1, 4-14 CACC) had a chance to draw closer in the fifth as it put three runners on base with two down and chased starter Jenna Maska from the game. Emily Larsen entered the circle and ended the Philadelphia rally, getting Bliss to strike out.

Maska gave up one run on eight hits in 4.2 innings to record the win. Larsen threw a perfect 2.1 innings of relief, including three strikeouts, and earned the save.

Stephanie Pepper (Toms River, N.J./Central Regional) fanned five and gave up nine hits in a complete-game loss.

Eight different Rams had one hit. Elontay Collins was 3-for-3 for Dominican.

Already ahead 1-0 thanks to a first-inning run, Dominican added to its advantage with a four-run sixth inning.

With runners at first and third, Shannon Truppi doubled the Chargers' lead with a ground out to short. Anne Shiebler tacked on the third run with a sacrifice fly. Haukap and Collins increased the lead to 5-0 with RBI singles.

Philadelphia got its offense going in the seventh, loading the bases with one out. A wild pitch scored Burrell, who was hit by a pitch to start the seventh, for the Rams' first run. Nicole Troisi (Norristown, Pa./Pope John Paul II) brought Philadelphia within 5-2 with a RBI fielder's choice that brought home Gianna Bliss (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville Area).

After a Renee Kakareka (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) two-out single, Erica D'Angelo (Broomall, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) ripped a double to left center to trim the gap to two and put the tying run at second base. However, the Chargers' Desiree Joines got out of trouble, getting Monica Levins (Norristown, Pa./Norristown Area) to line out to end the game.

Joines was the winning pitcher, scattering four hits and striking out four for the complete game win. Naomi Stas (Tuckerton, N.J./Pinelands Reg.) fanned two, while allowing five runs on nine hits in a losing effort.

Dominican's Emily Luzetsky was the only player in the game to have more than one hit, going 2-for-3.

Philadelphia heads to Cabrini for a non-conference doubleheader on Monday, April 11 at 3 p.m.
