Softball falls twice to Millersville in season opener

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Philadelphia University softball team started its 2017 season with a pair of 4-2 non-conference losses to host Millersville University Wednesday afternoon.

Naomi Stas (Tuckerton, N.J./Pinelands Regional) and Breck Urban (Mullica Hill, N.J./Paul VI) both had solid days at the plate for the Rams (0-2). Batting in the lead-off spot for the first time in her college career, Stas posted five hits in eight at-bats. Urban was 4-for-8, 3-for-4 in game one, and knocked in a run in her first collegiate appearances.

Monica Levins (Norristown, Pa./Norristown Area) drove in Philadelphia's first run of the season in the top of the third inning with a base hit to left to plate Stephanie Pepper (Toms River, N.J./Central Regional) to cap a two-out rally and put the Rams up 1-0. Pepper started the rally with a two-out single and advanced to second on an error on a ball hit by Emily Williams.

The run held up until Millersville (5-2) scored three times with two outs in the fifth inning to take a 3-1 lead. The Marauders had only two hits, but took advantage of two Ram errors and a wild pitch.

Millersville tacked on an insurance run on a Maggie Smith sixth-inning double.

Urban knocked in her first collegiate run in the seventh inning with a two-out double.

Cassidy Pinchorski earned the win, allowing one hit on eight hits in six innings. Pepper fanned six over six innings in a losing effort. Only one of the four runs scored off of Pepper was earned.

Trailing 1-0 in the top of the fourth, Madison Heno (Houston, Texas/St. Anges Academy) lifted a sacrifice fly to right that scored Williams from third to get Philadelphia on the board and tie the game at one. Philadelphia took the lead two innings later on a Courtney Wensel (Bechtelsville, Pa./Berks Catholic) RBI groundout.

In the bottom of the sixth, Millersville reclaimed the lead as it pushed three runs across. Smith tied the score with a one-out RBI single. Three batters later, Kelsey Campbell put the Marauders in front with a two-run double.

Stas had three runs, while Jovanna Alfonsi (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) added two hits in four at-bats.

Paige Harris was the winning pitcher in relief for Millersville. She allowed one run on two hits in two innings of work. Pinchorski came back in game two to throw a scoreless seventh for the save.

Stas recorded six strikeouts while allowing nine hits in a complete-game loss. She gave up just three earned runs.

Philadelphia heads to Clermont, Fla. for its Spring Break trip. The Rams open the trip on Saturday, March 11 against American International at 3:30 p.m.
