Weaver, pitching leads softball to sweep at Nyack

NYACK, N.Y. – The Philadelphia University softball team received tremendous pitching from Naomi Stas (Tuckerton, N.J./Pinelands Regional) and Stephanie Pepper (Toms River, N.J./Central Regional) and just enough offense from Shannon Weaver (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) to sweep Nyack, 1-0 in eight innings and 2-0, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon.

Stas went all eight innings in the opener to record her ninth victory of the season. She struck out 10 Warrior hitters and surrendered just two base hits. Stas would face just three batters over the minimum.

Philadelphia (18-21, 10-8 CACC) managed eight hits off of Nyack pitcher Brittany Blair, but couldn't put anything together until the eighth. With one out in the inning, Weaver started the Philadelphia rally as she doubled to left—her second hit of the game—and stole third base. Stas helped her own cause in the next at-bat, producing the go-ahead single to left that would score Weaver.

Madison Heno (Houston, Texas/St. Agnes Academy) also had two hits for the Rams.

Pepper was sensational in the nightcap, sitting down 17 Nyack hitters via strikeout and only walking one. The 17 strikeouts are the most by a Philadelphia pitcher in a seven-inning game in school. She struck out the first four batters she faced to start the game and fanned the final five to close it out.

Alexandra Schmidt has the record for most strikeouts in a game as she fanned 21 batters in an 11-inning 2-1 win over Georgian Court on April 2, 2009.

Nyack managed only three hits off of Pepper, who collected her eighth win of 2017.

Weaver drove in both Philadelphia runs with a two-out single back through the back in the fifth inning. The single scored Breck Urban (Mullica Hill, N.J./Paul VI), who was hit by a Nicole Wisser pitch, and Megan Letos (Bristow, Va./Stonewall Jackson), who reached safely on an error.

The Rams had six hits in the game-two win.

Philadelphia returns home to face Georgian Court in a CACC contest on Saturday, April 22 at noon.
