CLERMONT, Fla. – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) softball team (4-4) picked up two wins on Tuesday in Clermont, Fla. with victories over Lock Haven, 3-2, and Minnesota Crookston, 4-2. Jefferson moves back to .500 on the young season at 4-4. The Rams are 3-3 on their current spring break trip.
TUESDAY GAME ONE – Jefferson 3, Lock Haven 2
Junior Stephanie Pepper (W, 1-1) earned the win over Lock Haven on Tuesday for the Rams. Pepper tossed a complete game with nine strikeouts to just two walks while giving up two runs over 7.0 innings.
Junior Courtney Wensel went 2-for-3 in the win with a double and two RBI.
Sophomore Emily Williams also had an RBI double to start the scoring in the top of the first.
Lock Haven took the lead after runs in the bottom of the first and third innings before Wensel delivered her two-run double in the fifth.
TUESDAY GAME TWO – Jefferson 4, Minnesota Crookston 2
Jefferson benefitted from a four-run second inning to help lead them past the Golden Eagles in the evening. Sophomore Jovanna Alfonsi and Katelyn Stys started the inning with a pair of singles. Freshman Emily Bradley and junior Naomi Stas both reached on errors in between a Heno single. Wensel also singled in the inning.
Stas (W, 2-1) picked up the win on the evening as she struck out three. Pepper earned her first save as she pitched the final 1.2 innings, coming in during a bases-loaded jam. She struck out all five batters she saw to close the game.
The Rams return to action in Clermont, Fla. tomorrow, Wednesday, March 14 for a pair of early contests. Jefferson takes on Slippery Rock at 9 a.m. followed by Kutztown at 11:30 p.m.
