CLERMONT, Fla. – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) softball team (4-8) fell to both the Bridgeport Purple Knights, 3-2, and the Saint Michael's Purple Knights, 3-0, to close out the team's spring break trip to Clermont, Fla.
THURSDAY GAME ONE – Bridgeport 3, Jefferson 2 (8 innings)
Stephanie Pepper struck out 12 Purple Knights across 8.0 innings. The Rams scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game as the two squads headed to extra innings. Playing under the international tiebreaker, both teams placed a runner on second base to start the eighth. Bridgeport was able to score on a single while Jefferson could not move their runner over.
THURSDAY GAME TWO – Saint Michael's 3, Jefferson 0
The Rams fell in the second game to Saint Michael's of the NE10 by a final of 3-0. The loss closed out Jefferson's trip to Clermont, Fla.
Saint Michael's score twice in the third behind a two-hit inning. The Purple Knights added an insurance run in the sixth.
Jefferson managed just one hit and two baserunners in the contest. Junior Courtney Wensel reached base both times with a hit in the top of the fifth before a dropped third strike in the seventh. She was stranded on base both times.
Naomi Stas took the loss, pitching all 6.0 innings with two strikeouts while giving up six hits. Saint Michael's scored three times though only one run was earned.
Jefferson Softball opens conference play at home on Sunday, March 18 with Felician. The doubleheader starts at noon from the softball field on campus.
