PHILADELPHIA – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) softball team (4-10, 0-2 CACC) dropped a pair of home games on Sunday afternoon to the Felician Golden Falcons (5-12, 2-0 CACC) to open conference play. The Rams lost 6-2 in game one before dropping the second game 8-3.
GAME ONE – L, 6-2
Felician had 11 hits to the Rams' six in game one. The Golden Falcons scored in the top of the first before Jefferson responded with an RBI groundout by freshman Samantha Hurtado to even the score early, 1-1.
Felician then broke out for a five-run fourth inning to take a 6-1 lead. The Golden Falcons managed four hits in the inning with the help of an error that extended the inning. All five runs came with two outs.
Junior Courtney Wensel notched an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to get one back, 6-2.
Junior Stephanie Pepper (L, 1-3) threw a complete game loss with five strikeouts. Only two of the runs against her were earned.
GAME TWO – L, 8-3
Naomi Stas (L, 2-4) pitched all 7.0 innings in game two, giving up eight runs though only three were earned. The junior struck out nine in the outing with just one walk.
Similar to the first game, a five-run fourth inning gave Felician the lift it needed in game two. Scoreless through three, the Golden Falcons got two on base to start the fourth after two Jefferson errors. With two on and no outs, a single loaded the bases before a fielder's choice gave the Rams one out in the inning.
A single brought home one run before another fielder's choice put the Rams just one out away from ending the bases loaded jam. But a throwing error on the next play cleared the bases before another RBI single capped the scoring, 5-0.
Jefferson got three back in the bottom half of the inning. Sophomore Madison Heno had a two-run single to bring in sophomores Emily Williams and Katelyn Stys. Senior Erica D'Angelo then recorded an RBI single through the left side to bring in senior Katy Sullivan, 5-3.
That was all the scoring Jefferson would get in the contest as Felician tacked on a run in the fifth and another two in the seventh to win 8-3.
Sophomore Jovanna Alfonsi and Williams both went 2-for-3 in the game.
Weather permitting, Jefferson Softball returns to action at home on Tuesday, March 20 against East Stroudsburg in a nonconference doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
