LAKEWOOD, N.J. – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) softball team (17-22) dropped its first game of the double-elimination 2018 CACC Tournament to the No. 1-seeded Caldwell Cougars by a final of 5-0 from Georgian Court University in Lakewood, N.J. The No. 8-seeded Rams return to action today, Thursday, May 3 at 2 p.m. with the loser of No. 4-seeded Dominican and No. 5-seeded Post.
The Rams managed four hits in the 5-0 Thursday afternoon loss but could not string together a rally for a run. Sophomores Madison Heno and Breck Urban both recorded doubles in the contest. Heno leads the Rams with 11 doubles and 13 extra-base hits on the season.
Caldwell took a 1-0 lead in the first after a dropped pop up in the infield. The two pitchers then battled for the next three innings. Junior Stephanie Pepper, a 2018 All-CACC First Team selection, went the distance for the Rams, pitching all 6.0 innings with five strikeouts but struggled a bit with command as she walked five batters and hit an additional two batters.
A solo home run from Caldwell made the game 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth. The Cougars then tacked on three runs in the sixth to win 5-0 behind a bases-loaded hit by pitch, bases-loaded walk and sacrifice fly.
No. 8-seeded Jefferson returns to today, Thursday, May 3 with the loser of No. 4-seeded Dominican and No. 5-seeded Post. Action is slated for 2 p.m. (but could change based on the length of other game) at Georgian Court University's two softball fields.
