MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) softball team (1-1) opened the 2019 season with a doubleheader split at Millersville (4-3) on Thursday.
The Marauders took the first game, 4-1 and the Rams came back to win game two, 7-6.
GAME ONE – L, 4-1
Millersville got on the board in the second thanks to an RBI double and added a run-scoring single in the fourth for a 2-0 lead. Jefferson cut the deficit to one in the fifth when freshman Emily Kuberski singled home sophomore Emily Bradley. The Rams had a chance to put more runs on the board but left the bases loaded. The Marauders added two insurance runs in the bottom of the inning thanks to an RBI triple followed by a single. Jefferson got four players on base in the last two frames but could not push a run across.
GAME TWO – W, 7-6
The Rams jumped on the Marauders for three runs in the opening frame. Juniors Madison Heno and Breck Urban walked and singled respectively. Senior Courtney Wensel plated Heno with a base hit up the middle then Urban scored on a fielder's choice. Senior Stephanie Pepper knocked in Wensel with a single through the right side.
Millersville evened the score in the fourth with an RBI double and a two-run single. Jefferson regained the lead with two runs in the fifth. Urban smacked an RBI double to center then came home on a sacrifice fly. The Marauders tied the game at five with a two-run double in the sixth.
In the seventh, the Rams had runners at second and third with one out. Senior Naomi Stas put Jefferson back in front with a single to right and another run came across later on a fielder's choice. Millersville got within one in the bottom of the inning but the tying run was picked off at third base for the final out. Freshman Anastasia Reale picked up her first collegiate win while Pepper pitched the bottom of the seventh to earn the save.
Jefferson Softball travels to Florida for eight games beginning on Friday, March 8.
