KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) softball team (5-5) split its final two games in Florida on Monday, defeating Merrimack, 5-4 and falling to Augustana (S.D.), 10-2 in five innings.
GAME ONE – W, 5-4 vs. Merrimack
The Warriors opened the scoring with three runs in the first. The Rams took some time to get going, recording just one hit in the first 3.2 innings. Jefferson broke through with a two-out rally in the fourth. Juniors Breck Urban and Madison Heno each hit a single before senior Stephanie Pepper walked to load the bases. Junior Jovanna Alfonsi followed with a two-run double to cut the deficit to one.
Merrimack increased its lead to 4-2 in the sixth before Jefferson answered in the bottom half when Pepper drove in Heno with a double. Down one entering the bottom of the seventh, the Rams found themselves down to their last out with nobody on. That did not deter them as freshman Winnai Hoyt singled and went to second on a wild pitch. Urban then smacked a game-tying double. After Heno was hit by a pitch and Pepper reached on an error, the bases were juiced for Alfonsi. The junior showed tremendous plate discipline, drawing a walk to bring home Urban with the winning run.
GAME TWO – L, 10-2 (5 inn.) vs. Augustana (S.D.)
Each team posted two runs in the opening frame. Heno drove in freshman Dallas Urban with a base hit while Hoyt scored on a groundout. The Vikings took the lead with a pair of runs in the third on a two-run single. They added three in the fourth via a RBI single and a two-run double. In the fifth, Augustana made it 8-2 on a base hit then ended the game early with a two-run triple.
