PHILADELPHIA – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) softball team (15-23, 10-12 CACC) dropped a pair of games to visiting Georgian Court (41-6, 22-2 CACC) on Wednesday. The Lions won 9-8 in game one and 2-1 in nine innings in the second contest.
GAME ONE – L, 9-8
GCU got started quickly, posting six runs in the opening frame. The Rams got two back in the bottom of the inning on a base hit by senior Stephanie Pepper. The Lions blasted a three-run home run to increase their advantage to 9-2 in the second. Jefferson closed the gap to 9-4 in the bottom of the second via a two-run single by freshman Winnai Hoyt.
The Rams rallied for four runs in the fourth to get within one. Senior Naomi Stas recorded an RBI triple, junior Breck Urban singled in a run then scored on a fielder's choice and senior Erin Maher drove in a run with a base hit. However, the Jefferson offense went flat after that point, putting just one runner on base the rest of the way.
GAME TWO – L, 2-1 (9 inn.)
The two teams combined for seven runners in scoring position during regulation but could not push a run across and went into extra innings in a scoreless tie.
GCU hit three straight singles to load the bases to start the top of the eighth. Pepper retired the next three batters to keep the game scoreless. The Rams had a one-out single in the bottom half but could not score the winning run.
The international tie-breaker took effect in the ninth and the Lions took advantage with a lead-off RBI single for the game's first run. Georgian Court added another run in the frame on an error. Urban led off the bottom of the ninth with a base hit to put runners on the corners. Stas came home on a double play and GCU ended the game with a strikeout before Jefferson could plate the tying run.
Pepper took the tough-luck loss, pitching a complete game and allowing just two runs, both unearned. She struck out nine batters and walked just one.
