LAKEWOOD, N.J. – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) softball team (18-26) advanced to the second day of the CACC Tournament, staving off elimination with a 4-1 win over Dominican (N.Y.) on Thursday. Earlier in the day, the eighth-seeded Rams dropped their first game of the tourney to top-seeded Georgian Court, 7-2.
Jefferson will face third-seeded Caldwell in another elimination game on Friday, May 3 at 11 a.m.
GAME ONE – L, 7-2 vs. Georgian Court
GCU opened the scoring with three runs in the second on a double and a two-run single. Jefferson closed the gap to one in the third on two bases-loaded walks by juniors Madison Heno and Emily Williams.
The Lions increased their lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the third on a solo homer. The Rams put two runners on in the fourth and one in the fifth but could not cut into the deficit. Georgian Court then recorded three insurance runs in the sixth on a bases-clearing single. The Lions held Jefferson to five hits in the contest.
GAME TWO – W, 4-1 vs. Dominican (N.Y.)
The Chargers got on the board first with an RBI single in the opening inning. Senior Naomi Stas drove in junior Breck Urban with a base hit in the second to knot the game at one. Urban reached with a single and it was her 100th career hit.
It was tied until the fourth when Urban led off with a base hit and senior Stephanie Pepper followed with a two-run home run over the left field fence to put the Rams ahead.
Pepper's homer was all that Stas needed, as she tossed a two-hit complete game for the victory. She struck out three batters. Jefferson added an insurance run in the seventh when sophomore LilyAnn Yoakum scored on a fielder's choice.
