Women's basketball defeats Bridgeport 57-46 in season opener

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – The Philadelphia University women's basketball team had three players score in double figures as the Rams got the 2016-17 season started on a winning note, defeating the University of Bridgeport 57-46 Saturday afternoon in Hubbell Gym.

Playing in her first collegiate contest, Erin Maher (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) came off-the-bench to shoot 7-of-15 overall, 5-of-9 from 3-point range, to record a game-high 19 points in 25 minutes of action. Maher also pulled down six rebounds.

Behind a 10-of-12 afternoon at the free throw line, Jessica Kaminski (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Wood) had 15 points, 12 rebounds, and six assists. Alexandra Warren (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) contributed 12 points and six rebounds as she played all 40 minutes in her collegiate debut.

After going to the locker room at the half tied at 24, Philadelphia (1-0) came to life in the third quarter as the Rams went on a 11-2 run in the first 2:53 to open up a 35-26 lead. Kaminski led the charge with five points, while Warren added four.

Maher extended the Philadelphia lead to 46-35 with her second 3-pointer of the quarter with 1:58 remaining.

Philadelphia shot 47.4 percent (9-of-19) from the field during the third quarter, while holding Bridgeport (0-1) to 26.7 percent (4-of-15).

Despite shooting just 2-of-11 in the final quarter, the Rams weren't threatened by the Purple Knights as Philadelphia went a perfect 6-of-6 at the free throw line. Philadelphia took a game-high 15-point lead when Kaminski made two free throws to make the score 55-40 with 4:25 left.

Aaliyah Mercer led Bridgeport—who was ahead by six in the first quarter—with 13 points, eight rebounds, and five assists.

Bridgeport shot 30.8 percent (16-of-52) overall, while Philadelphia finished up at 29.3 percent (17-of-58). The Rams outrebounded the Purple Knights 43-35, 17-11 on the offensive end.

Philadelphia will take on Queens (N.Y.) College in a non-conference tilt on Sunday, Nov. 13 at noon in Hubbell Gym.
