PHILADELPHIA – Jessica Kaminski (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Wood) and Jackie McCarron (Harleysville, Pa./Landsale Catholic) combined for 35 points for the Philadelphia University women's basketball team in a 54-45 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory over the University of the Sciences Thursday night in the Gallagher Center.
Kaminski had a tremendous night at the free throw line, going 11-of-11, as she narrowly missed a triple-double with a game-high 19 points, nine rebounds, and a career-best eight steals. McCarron shot 6-of-13 from the field to record a career-high 16 points to go along with seven rebounds.
Philadelphia (4-3, 1-1 CACC) used a tremendous defensive effort in the opening quarter to get out to a 12-5 lead after 10 minutes of play. The Rams forced the Devils into three turnovers and 2-of-13 shooting. Philadelphia, led by five Kaminski points, was 5-of-13 from the field.
The Rams' lead was trimmed to 14-10 at the 7:58 mark of the second quarter on a Sarah Abbonizio 3-pointer. Philadelphia's response to the basket was a 13-5 surge, capped by an Alexandra Warren (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) 3-pointer, to move ahead by a half-high 12 points (27-15) with 1:09 left in the half.
A 5-0 spurt early in the third quarter allowed Philadelphia's lead to balloon to a game-high 15 points (34-19) on a Kaminski fast break layup. USciences—the 21st ranked team in the D2SIDA Media Poll—came back to close the gap to eight (41-33) at the end of the quarter.
The Devils got as close as five (46-41) on an Abbonizio layup with 5:54 remaining in the contest. Philadelphia wouldn't let USciences get any closer as the Rams rattled off six straight points to reclaim an 11-point lead (52-41) at the 2:49 mark on a Rachel Day (Horsham, Pa./Archbishop Wood) free throw.
Colleen Walsh scored 18 points, grabbed three rebounds, and dished out three assists to pace the Devils (6-2, 1-1 CACC).
The Rams finished the game shooting 33.3 percent (16-of-48) from the field, while the Devils shot 34.7 percent (17-of-49). Thanks to Kaminski's perfect night at the line, Philadelphia was an 86.4 percent (19-of-22) shooting team. USciences was 4-of-7 at the line.
Philadelphia will travel to Wilmington (Del.) for a CACC battle on Saturday, Dec. 3 at 1 p.m.
