Women’s basketball can’t overcome slow start in Senior Day loss to Caldwell

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University women's basketball team suffered an 88-50 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) loss to Caldwell University Saturday afternoon in the Gallagher Center.

Prior to the start of the contest, the Rams—who entered the day 27-0 on Senior Day—honored seniors Jackie McCarron (Harleysville, Pa./Lansdale Catholic), Alicia Lister (Blandon, Pa./Muhlenburg), and Regan Marriner (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) in a Senior Day ceremony.

The Rams (12-13, 7-9 CACC) struggled to find their shooting touch in the opening 10 minutes, making just 11.1 percent (2-of-18) of its shots and found themselves down 21-7 after one. Caldwell (20-4, 15-1 CACC)—who opened the game on a 10-0 run—shot 61.5 percent (8-of-13) overall, including a perfect 3-of-3 from 3-point range, during the quarter.

In the second quarter, Caldwell continued its strong shooting, knocking down 68.8 percent (11-of-16) of its attempts—seven makes were 3-pointers—as the Cougars opened up a 50-22 lead. Alynna Williams (Ambler, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) hit a running 3-pointer from the right wing as the half expired to cap a 5-0 spurt and bring the Rams within 50-27 at the break.

Williams—Philadelphia's leading scorer with 11 points in 15 minutes of action—closed the gap to 22 points (52-31) when she made a 13-foot jumper at the 7:32 mark of the third quarter.

Jessica Kaminski (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Wood) came off-the-bench to provide the Rams with eight points, six rebounds, and three assists. Kelsey Jones (Lafayette Hill, Pa./Mount Saint Joseph Academy) added eight points, all in the opening 20 minutes.

Kristen Drogsler led the Cougars with 33 points on 8-of-11 shooting from 3-point range,11 rebounds, and 8 assists. Drogsler hit seven threes in the opening half on her way to 24 first-half points.

Andie Lennon added 12 points and 7 assists, while Maura Kelty scored 11 points.

Caldwell finished the game shooting 57.6 percent (34-of-59) from the field, 52.2 percent (12-of-23) from behind the 3-point arc. The Rams shot 26.7 percent (20-of-75) overall, 29.4 percent (5-of-17) from three.

Philadelphia travels to Lakewood, N.J. on Thursday, Feb. 16 to take on Georgian Court in a CACC contest at 6 p.m. in the Wellness Center.
