Strong Third Quarter Fuels Women’s Basketball to Victory Over Queens, 60-54

PHILADELPHIA – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) women's basketball team (1-0) took down the Queens (N.Y.) Knights (0-1) by a final of 60-54 from the Gallagher Center on Saturday afternoon in an East Region Conference Challenge matchup.

A strong second half and bench scoring for the Rams helped lead Jefferson to the season-opening victory.

The Rams trailed after the first quarter as Queens shot 46.2% from the floor to go up 17-10 after 10 minutes of play. Senior Rachel Day scored six of the 10 in the opening period for the Rams.

Both teams struggled a bit in the second quarter from the field as the Knights took a 28-21 lead into halftime.

Jefferson came out firing in the third quarter, shooting 47.4% as a team behind 16 points from redshirt freshman Caitlyn Cunningham (9) and redshirt sophomore Ayoola Oguntuase (7).

Queens went up 30-21 to start the half before Jefferson went on a 13-point run to take a 34-30 advantage. The Knights got close a few times but the Rams never relinquished the lead for the remainder of the third and fourth quarters.

Cunningham and redshirt junior Erin Maher led Jefferson with 13 points each while Oguntuase finished with 11 points in 18 minutes. Cunningham also dished out five assists and had four steals with just one turnover in 29 minutes of play.

Redshirt junior Jessica Kaminski and junior Beverly Kum each grabbed a game-high 11 boards on the afternoon. Kaminski added six assists and four steals in the effort.

Jefferson Women's Basketball now takes on Molloy on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. to close out the East Region Conference Challenge from the Gallagher Center.
