PHILADELPHIA – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) women's basketball team (2-0) turned in a 71-47 victory over the Molloy Lions (0-2) from the Gallagher Center in an East Region Conference Challenge matchup to close out the Rams' opening weekend on Sunday.
A balanced scoring effort for the Rams and tight defense in the second and third quarters helped lead Jefferson to the victory.
Senior Rachel finished with a team-high 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting including 3-of-6 from behind the arc. Redshirt freshman Caitlyn Cunningham followed her up with 12 points off the bench with three made three-pointers while redshirt junior Jessica Kaminski and redshirt sophomore Alynna Williams each finished with 11 and 10 points respectively. Kaminski was 5-of-5 on free throws.
Redshirt junior Erin Maher scored nine points behind 2-of-2 from three and 3-of-4 from the foul line.
The Rams went up 21-14 in the first quarter. Both teams shot 6-of-13 in the opening period while Jefferson hit 6-of-9 free throws to make the difference.
Jefferson was then able to hold Molloy to 4-of-12 shooting in the second quarter to take a 35-23 lead at halftime.
The Lions came out in the third quarter and completed a three-point play before Jefferson went on 12-0 run to go up 47-26. Jefferson stayed on that run for the next nine minutes before Molloy made a shot with under a minute to play for their second basket of the quarter. The Rams were able to limit the Lions to 2-of-12 in the third.
With a healthy 53-28 going into the fourth quarter, the Rams were able to get some younger players in the game for the final 10 minutes before winning, 71-47. In total, 11 Rams had points in the combined effort.
Jefferson Women's Basketball returns to action at home from the Gallagher Center on Wednesday, Nov. 15 against Bridgeport at 6 p.m.
