KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) women's basketball team (6-1) suffered its first loss of the season on the road to the Kutztown Golden Bears (4-3) on Wednesday evening from the Keystone Arena by a final of 73-69.
The loss ends Jefferson's six-game winning streak to begin the 2017-18 season.
Junior transfer Beverly Kum led the Rams with a game-high 21 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field and 9-of-10 from the free-throw line.
Senior Rachel Day put up 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the floor.
Redshirt junior Erin Maher scored 11 points on the evening with three made three-pointers to go along with four assists.
Redshirt junior Jessica Kaminski had seven points, a team-high five assists and a team-best seven rebounds.
Jefferson trailed by two points at the half. Kutztown went on an early 8-0 run to go up 13-4. The Rams were able to trim the deficit down to six by the end of the quarter, 21-15.
Jefferson tied the game up at 29-29 near the end of the second quarter before Kutztown made a layup with 20 seconds remaining to take the two-point 31-29 edge into the break.
Jefferson opened the second half on a 9-2 advantage to take a 38-33 lead. Kum contributed four of her 17 second-half points in the early run. Both teams shot 50.0 percent from the floor in the third quarter while Jefferson also went 7-of-8 from the line to keep pace with the Golden Bears, 49-47.
Both squads combined for 46 points in the final quarter. A three-pointer by Maher got the Rams within one with under five minutes remaining, 61-60. But Kutztown quickly stretched the lead back to nine with roughly three minutes to play, 69-60.
The Rams went on a 6-2 run in the final minute but ran out of time before catching the Golden Bears. Kutztown won by a 73-69 final to end Jefferson's winning streak.
The Rams begin conference play on the road at Georgian Court on Saturday, Dec. 2 at 1 p.m. followed by a CACC matchup at home on Tuesday, Dec. 5 on Military Appreciation Night against Chestnut Hill.
