Women’s Basketball Falls to USciences in OT for First CACC Loss, 72-67

PHILADELPHIA – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) women's basketball team (12-2, 5-1 CACC) dropped its first conference game of 2017-18 to the USciences Devils (13-2, 5-1 CACC) on the road from Bobby Morgan Arena by a final of 72-67 in overtime on Saturday afternoon.

It comes as Jefferson's first conference loss of 2017-18 after starting 5-0.

Junior Beverly Kum led the Rams with 18 points and 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the campaign.

Redshirt junior Jessica Kaminski also notched a double-double behind 10 points and 10 boards to go along with three assists.

Redshirt sophomore Alynna Williams scored 14 points with three assists and three steals.

Redshirt freshman Caitlyn Cunningham accounted for 11 points off the bench.

As a team, the Rams shot 44.6% behind 25-of-56 shooting including 46.2% from three-point range (6-of-13). Jefferson shot 61.1% from the free-throw line (11-of-18).

Jefferson led points in the paint, 34-22, and bench points, 11-1, while rebounding was even, 31-31.

The Rams held a 34-28 edge at halftime. Jefferson hit 8-of-11 shots in the opening quarter to take a 17-15 advantage. All five starters contributed in the first quarter. The Rams limited USciences to 15 points in the first and 13 points in the second as the lead stretched to six at halftime.

USciences took the lead about halfway through the third quarter, 39-36, for the first time since early in the first. The Devils then hit two free throws to go up by five before baskets from Kaminski, Kum and a three from Williams evened the game back up at 43-43 with 1:30 left in the quarter. Kum gave Jefferson the advantage with 22 seconds before USciences' Colleen Walsh sunk a three with a few seconds remaining as the Devils took a one-point lead, 46-45, into the fourth.

The game was never outside of a two-possession game in the fourth. Jefferson's Kum hit a shot to give the Rams their largest lead of the quarter, 53-50, before a 10-3 USciences' run put them up by four, 60-56, with 2:04 on the clock. Trailing by three, the Devils missed two key free throws with 35 seconds left. Kum got the rebound for the Rams before she assisted on a game-tying three by Maher with 20 seconds remaining to send the contest into overtime, 60-60.

The Devils opened the five-minute overtime period on a 9-2 run to go up by seven with 1:49 left, 69-62. Jefferson trimmed the lead down to three after a three from Cunningham and a free throw by Kum, 69-66. The Devils hit one of two from the line down at the other end to make it a two-possession game, 70-66, before holding on for the 72-67 victory.

Jefferson Basketball returns to the Gallagher Center for the first time in 2018 on Wednesday, Jan. 10 when the Rams welcome Nyack. The women play at 6 p.m. followed by the men at 8 p.m. Jefferson will be unveiling new uniforms at the affair.
