Women’s Basketball Hangs On Against Felician for Ninth-Straight Victory, 63-62

PHILADELPHIA – Behind a game-winning shot by redshirt sophomore Alynna Williams, the Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) women's basketball team (21-2, 13-1 CACC) edged out the Felician Golden Falcons (6-14, 4-9 CACC) on Saturday afternoon from the Gallagher Center by a final of 63-62.

It all came down to the Rams' final possession. With 12 seconds left, Williams hit a jumper just shy of the free throw line to put Jefferson up by one. Strong defensive pressure on the other end thwarted Felician's final shot at the buzzer.

The win moved Jefferson to 13-1 in conference play and 13-0 at home.

Redshirt junior Erin Maher and senior Rachel Day both finished with 14 points. With two-made three-pointers, Day tied the school record for career three-pointers with 228. One more and she becomes the Rams' all-time three-pointer record holder.

Williams scored 12 points including the final crucial two. Redshirt junior Jessica Kaminski ended up with a double-double behind 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Redshirt sophomore Ayoola Oguntuase added six points off the bench in 11 minutes.

The Rams trailed at halftime, 32-31, after being held to just nine points in the second quarter. Turnovers plagued both teams in the first half as they combined for 25. Jefferson forced nine of the Golden Falcons' 13 first-half turnovers with steals from their press.

Jefferson overcame the slight halftime deficit before taking and stretching their lead to 10 in the middle of the third. Kaminski was fouled on a layup and converted the three-point play at the line to make it 44-34 with 4:03 to play in the quarter. The Golden Falcons trimmed down the lead and got within one before Jefferson took a three-point advantage into the fourth quarter.

Felician took the lead early in the fourth. Jefferson hung tight and tied it up at 52-52 with 5:09 remaining. Trailing for most of the fourth, Jefferson stayed within a possession as the score was even again at 61-61 with 1:48 to play. Felician hit one of two from the line with 39 seconds on the clock to go up by one.

Williams scored the go-ahead shot for Jefferson, leading them to victory, 63-62, as time winded down.

Jefferson finished with 12 steals on the day: Day (4), Caitlyn Cunningham (2), Kaminski (2), Beverly Kum (2) and Williams (2).

With identical conference records of 13-1, Jefferson Women's Basketball meets up with USciences on Wednesday, Feb. 7 at 6 p.m. from the Gallagher Center in a CACC South showdown. The men's game follows at 8 p.m.
