PHILADELPHIA – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) women's basketball team (21-3, 13-2 CACC) had its nine-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday evening to the No. 18 USciences Devils (22-2, 14-1 CACC) by a final score of 56-51 from the Gallagher Center.
The loss comes as the Rams' first at the Gallagher Center in 2017-18. The loss is also the squad's first since Jan. 6 when Jefferson fell at USciences to begin the new calendar year.
Redshirt sophomore Alynna Williams scored a game-high 21 points on Wednesday. Williams hit 7-of-12 shots including 5-of-5 from three-point range. She also grabbed six rebounds and made two assists.
Junior transfer Beverly Kum was the only other Ram in double figures. She finished with 11 points.
Jefferson jumped out to a 17-7 advantage at the end of the first quarter after limiting the Devils to just three field goals. The Rams' defensive effort in the early stages of the game was noticeable around the perimeter as USciences went 1-of-5 from three-point range.
USciences found a bit of rhythm in the second quarter, hitting 7-of-10 from the field including 3-of-4 from deep as the teams were even at the half, 27-27.
The Rams hung tight in the third, trailing by just a basket entering the final quarter.
Falling behind 50-43, their largest deficit of the affair, Jefferson went on an 8-0 run to take a 51-50 lead with under three minutes to play.
Two made free throws put USciences back on top with a minute to play, 52-51. A USciences layup followed by a Jefferson turnover and foul helped send the Devils back to the line to extend their edge back up to five to put the contest out of reach.
Jefferson Women's Basketball returns to action this Saturday, Feb. 10 against Bloomfield at the Gallagher Center. Action begins at 2 p.m. followed by the men's affair at 4 p.m.
