PHILADELPHIA – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) women's basketball team released its 2019-20 schedule on Thursday. The Rams have 28 games on the slate, including 13 at the Gallagher Center, as they look to repeat as CACC champions after their 2019 victory.
Tom Shirley will lead the Rams for the 31st season. An early highlight for his group will be a three-game exhibition series against a trio of Division I opponents, including 11-time national champion UConn on November 3. It is the first time that Jefferson will face the Huskies since the 2013-14 campaign. UConn head coach Geno Auriemma, a Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, grew up in nearby Norristown and attended West Chester University. Ticket information for the contest will be announced at a later date.
The Rams begin the regular season with a tip-off tournament at Chestnut Hill, where they will meet Queens (N.Y.) on November 9 and Molloy on November 10. The home opener is scheduled for November 19 versus Kutztown. Jefferson has a quality non-conference schedule featuring six teams that competed in a conference tournament in 2018-19.
"We are excited about "exhibition week" as we face three formidable opponents," said Shirley. "We have a city opponent with Drexel along with a Big East battle at Seton Hall and, of course, 11-time national champion UConn. The nine non-conference games certainly allow us to bolster our resume in search of an NCAA bid. The CACC will once again be challenging and, with an All-South Division final four last year, our division will be a difficult road."
The Rams begin CACC play at home versus Wilmington (Del.) on December 3. From mid-December until the end of the regular season, Jefferson will play all conference competition with the exception of a home date against Southern Connecticut State on February 5. The campaign closes against Holy Family on February 29 at the Gallagher Center.
The top four teams in both the North and South Divisions qualify for the CACC Tournament. Quarterfinal games are scheduled for March 3 at campus sites. The semifinals and final will be contested at USciences on March 7-8. The CACC champion earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Last season, the Rams captured their third CACC crown with a 74-73 overtime win over USciences. Jefferson made its 11th appearance in the NCAA Tournament in the process. The squad set a new school record for wins in a season, finishing at 29-3.
Dates, times and opponents are subject to change. Any updates will be posted on the women's basketball schedule page.
