KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Thomas Jefferson University women's lacrosse team (0-2) was edged out by host Kutztown (2-1), 14-13 on Friday.
The teams were even at two apiece through the first eight minutes of play. Freshman Erin Avanzato gave the Rams the lead with a free position goal at 20:24. However, the Golden Bears responded with four straight tallies to go ahead 6-3 with 16:43 left in the half. Freshman Ellie Lefton (10:12) and junior Erin Campbell (9:20) recorded back-to-back goals to get Jefferson within one. Each squad hit the back of the net twice in the final six minutes and Kutztown had an 8-7 halftime advantage.
The Golden Bears netted the first goal of the second period before the Rams posted three in a row to take a 10-9 lead. Freshman Madison Caffrey scored the first before assisting on senior Sarah von Lange's marker. Avanzato then potted her second of the day. With the score 11-10, Kutztown rallied for three consecutive markers to go in front 13-11 with 9:38 to go. Lefton found the cage again (6:36) but the Golden Bears scored again at 5:12. With 35 seconds remaining, von Lange closed the gap to one again (14-13) but Kutztown won the ensuing draw and ran out the clock.
