Women’s soccer plays to 1-1 draw with Nyack

PHILADELPHIA – Junior midfielder Michaela Van Antwerp (Andover, Mass./Andover) scored her second goal of the 2013 season in the Philadelphia University women's soccer team's 1-1 draw with Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) foe Nyack on Homecoming Day on Saturday at Ravenhill Field.

Philadelphia is now 1-5-1 overall and 1-3-1 against the CACC, while Nyack goes to 5-3-1 overall and 4-1-1 in conference play.

Van Antwerp gave the Rams a 1-0 lead at the 19:32 mark as she drilled a crossing shot from the right side of the penalty box into the left side of the net. Freshman midfielder Andrea Neski (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Ossining).

The match remained 1-0 until Sandy Garcia tied the match at one in the 58th minute with a chip shot that made it under the crossbar from six yards out. Cyan Jean-Baptiste setup the play as she centered the ball from the left side.

Philadelphia regained its composure and outshot Nyack 7-1 during the rest of regulation, but couldn't get anything passed keeper Madeline Barbarino.

After the first overtime period which had neither team attempt a shot, the Rams got off a pair of shots early in the second overtime, but both went wide. Philadelphia was awarded a late corner kick, but time ran out before the team got it off.

Sophomore keeper Courtney Shaw (Langhorne, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) stopped three shots for Philadelphia, while Barbarino finished with four for Nyack.

The Rams owned a 16-8 shot advantage, including an 11-4 margin in the second half.

Philadelphia heads to Chestnut Hill for a CACC match-up on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m.
