PHILADELPHIA – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) women's soccer team (1-1) used two-first half goals to hold off the Queens College Knights on Saturday afternoon from Ravenhill Field in the Rams' 2017 home opener. Jefferson came away with the 2-1 victory after a hard-fought 90 minutes.
Jefferson sophomore Dena Noiseux (Merrimack, N.H. / Merrimack) scored in the 6th minute and again in the 21st minute to put the Rams out in front 2-0 early in the nonconference affair.
Noiseux scored her first on a rebound after the Queens keeper made a save while the second came on a free kick beyond the top of the box. She led the Rams with five shots and three shots on goal.
The goals gave the Rams a 2-0 edge heading into halftime which was dominated by the Jefferson offense. In the first, Jefferson outshot Queens, 12-5, which included seven shots on goal.
Queens looks determined, coming out strong in the second half. The pace of the game favored the Knights for most of the final 45 minutes. A goal in the 61st minute for Queens was started by a free kick about 25 yards away by Alma Mana'o before being tipped for the goal by Erin Vernillo, trimming the Jefferson lead down to one with 30 minutes to play.
Over the course of the match, the two teams battled it out for possession. The tenacious defensive effort led to two injury stoppages, one for each team.
After a lopsided first-half shot total, Queens evened out the mark, outshooting Jefferson 12-5 in the second half for an even 17-all on shots after two halves.
Junior keeper Erin Tinneny (Collegeville, Pa. / Perkiomen Valley [W, 1-1]) came up with two saves in the first half and four in the second to help limit the Knights to just one goal.
The Rams return to action at Post on Saturday, Sept. 9 at noon for their first conference matchup of 2017.
