CALDWELL, N.J. – The No. 5-seeded Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) women's soccer team (7-10-1) saw its 2018 season come to a close on Monday afternoon from Kiwanis Oval in Caldwell, N.J. to the No. 4-seeded Caldwell Cougars (10-6-1) by a final of 2-0.
Caldwell scored two timely first-half goals to take the early advantage in the conference playoff game before holding on for the win.
The Cougars struck first in the 17th minute when Carlyn Salus converted a corner opportunity feed to her from Meghan Grundhauser, 1-0.
Caldwell added a second goal in the 31st minute when Macie Pennington gave the Cougars a 2-0 halftime edge.
Jefferson managed nine shots in the effort. Four came in the first half while five came in the final 45 minutes. Three of the Rams' shots were on target in the first half with Caldwell's keeper making saves on them.
Junior Alexa Karakitsios had a shot saved in the 51st minute to begin the second half. Junior MaryKate Ulmer, a 2018 All-CACC Second Team selection, had a shot go wide in the 55th minute while the Rams' next chance did not occur until Ulmer struck the post in the 84th minute. Freshman Kelsey Butler then followed it up a few seconds later with a shot that went high to end the opportunity.
The Rams' final chance came on freshman Gabrielle Marra's shot in the 87th minute that was saved.
The loss ends Jefferson's season while Caldwell will move on to the CACC Semifinals on Friday at Post University.
