Women's tennis rallies to defeat Chestnut Hill 5-4

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University women's tennis team ovecame a 4-2 deficit to pick up its first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory of the season, defeating visiting Chestnut Hill, 5-4, Friday afternoon on the Abraham Salaman Tennis Courts.

The Rams (3-4, 1-2 CACC) earned their first victory over the Griffins (0-4, 0-4 CACC) since Oct. 8, 2009—snapping a nine-match losing streak.

Philadelphia opened up a 2-1 advantage with victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles.

In the No. 1 flight, Jala Hamada (Giza, Egypt/Dar El-Tarbia, IGCSE) and Linde Zwaan (Apeldoorn, Netherlands/Gymnasium Apeldoorn) improved to 4-3 overall as they defeated Louise Charley and Hannah Murphy, 8-6. Emiy Zygmunt (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) and Katelyn High (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) fought back from 6-7 and 7-8 to knock off Nicole Yang and Madison Jacobus in a tiebreak, 9-8 (8-6) at No. 3. Zygmunt and High earned their fifth win of the season.

After Chestnut Hill picked up wins at No. 1, No. 4, and No. 3 singles to claim a 4-2 lead, Mariana Sampaio (Brusque, Brazil/Colegio Consul Carlos Renaux) got Philadelphia back on track with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph against Daniela Siqueira in the No. 5 match.

Zwaan tied the match at four as she picked up her team-leading fifth victory over the season, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) over Charley. High clinched the match for Philadelphia, defeating Yang in a hard-fought contest at No. 6 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).

Philadelphia heads to Connecticut for a CACC match at Post on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 1 p.m.
