Women’s tennis secures CACC Tournament berth with Senior Day win over Caldwell

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University women's tennis team will be participating in the 2016 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Tournament after claiming the final spot with a 5-4 Senior Day win over Caldwell on Saturday.

The Rams wrap up the regular season at 6-7 overall and took the fifth spot in the conference tournament with a 3-4 mark. Philadelphia will travel to USciences for the opening round on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 2 p.m. In the regular season, the Devils defeated the Rams 5-4 on Sept. 14.

Before the start of Saturday's match, the women's tennis program honored its two senior student-athletes: Jala Hamada (Giza, Egypt/Dar El-Tarbia, IGCSE) and Mariana Sampaio (Brusque, Brazil/Colegio Consul Carlos Renaux).

Philadelphia's No. 3 doubles team of Katelyn High (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) and Emily Zygmunt (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) got the Rams off to a fast with an 8-0 victory over Debra Pellegrino and Claudia Romano. High and Zygmunt has a team-best nine doubles victories.

After Caldwell (4-9, 1-6 CACC) evened the match with a win at No. 2 doubles, Philadelphia's top tandem of Hamada and Linde Zwaan (Apeldoorn, Netherlands/Gymnasium Apeldoorn) gave the Rams the lead going into singles play, picked up a hard-fought 9-8 (8-6) triumph against Rebecca Ryan and Valeria Otarola.

The advantage widen to 4-1 as the Rams picked up wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. In the No. 5 match, High rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Pellegrino to improve to 8-4. Tabitha Porter (Sumner, Maine/Lisbon) notched her fourth win of the season as she defeated Romano in the No. 6 flight, 6-1, 6-0.

Caldwell fought back to tie the match at four, claiming wins at No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4.

Zwaan dropped the first set of her No. 1 match against Ryan in a tiebreak 7-6 (9-7). She bounced back nicely to win the final two sets 6-1, 6-3 and clinch the match and the playoff spot. Zwaan has a team-high nine singles victories.
