Women's tennis opens spring season with loss to West Chester

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University women's tennis team opened its spring season with a 9-0 loss to West Chester University Tuesday afternoon in the Legacy Youth Tennis Center.

West Chester (7-2) earned the points at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles at the start of the match via walkover. Philadelphia (6-9) played the match with five players.

In the No. 1 doubles match, Linde Zwaan (Apeldoorn, Netherlands/Gymnasium Apelddorn) and Mariana Sampaio (Brusque, Brazil/Colegio Consul Carlos Renaux) suffered an 8-0 defeat in their first match together to Claire Uhle and Maddy Shaak. Emily Zygmunt (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) and Katelyn High (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) fell to Rylee Power and Gracyn Towler 8-1 in the No. 2 match.

High began singles play against Abriana Nolan dropped the first set of the No. 4 match 6-0. She put up a solid fight in the second set, but fell 6-3

Zygmunt was knocked off at No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-0 and then Zwaan was upended in the No. 1 flight, 6-1, 6-0. Sampaio lost to Power 6-0, 6-1. Tabitha Porter (Libson, Maine/Lisbon) closed out the match with a 6-1, 6-0 loss at No. 5 to Sophie Rathmell.

Philadelphia (6-9) hits the road on Sunday, March 26 to take on the University of District of Columbia.
