Women’s tennis defeats Salem International for first win of spring

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University women's tennis team notched its first win of the spring with an 8-1 victory over visiting Salem International Friday afternoon in the Legacy Youth Tennis Center.

Philadelphia (7-10) swept the doubles matches to take a quick 3-0 lead. Linde Zwaan (Apeldoorn, Netherlands/Gymnasium Apeldoorn) and Mariana Sampaio (Brusque, Brazil/Colegio Consul Carlos Renaux) were 8-2 winners over Felice Reed and Kaija Scott in the No. 1 match to get things rolling. The No. 3 tandem of Usha Baublitz (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) and Tabitha Porter (Sumner, Maine/Lisbon) cruised to an 8-1 victory against Shelby Turpin and Waverly Federico. Emily Zygmunt (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) and Katelyn High (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) completed the sweep with an 8-5 win in the No. 2 flight over Jen Foreman and Megan Perez.

Salem International (1-9) earned its only point via walkover at No. 6 singles.

Zwaan got the singles matches underway with a 6-2, 6-0 triumph in the No. 1 flight against Foreman. Zygmunt clinched the match victory as she knocked off Reed 6-0, 6-1 in No. 2 action.

In the No. 3 match, Sampaio was a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Turpin. High won the No. 4 match against Scott 6-4, 6-2. Porter completed the match, defeating Federico 8-0 in the No. 5 flight.

Philadelphia returns to action on Monday, April 10 with a non-conference match at Millersville at 2:30 p.m.
