Wensel, Justus propel volleyball past Caldwell

CALDWELL, N.J. – Courtney Wensel (Bechtelsville, Pa./Berks Catholic) and Corinne Justus (Allentown, Pa./Emmaus) combined for 27 kills to propel the Philadelphia University women's volleyball team to a 3-1 (25-22, 19-25, 25-20, 25-21) Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory over Caldwell University Saturday afternoon in the Newman Center.

In the win—the Rams fifth in a row, Wensel recorded a match-high 14 kills, 10 digs, and three service aces; while Justus contributed 13 kills and 2.5 total blocks (1 solo, 4 assists).

Becca Lutterschmidt (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehal) and Mariah Cadzow (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) both added nine kills. The nine kills are a career high for Lutterschmidt. In addition to the nine kills, Cadzow tallied 12 digs.

Alexandra Harrington (St. Leonard, Md./Huntingtown) recorded 45 assists and eight digs. Alexis Leddy (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic) had 29 of the team's season-high 77 digs.

Philadelphia (9-3, 2-0 CACC) erased a 14-10 set-one deficit with a 7-3 spurt, including two Justus kills, to tie the set at 17 on a Lutterschmidt kill. The Rams used a quick 5-1 surge to take a 23-20 advantage—matching its largest on the set on another Justus kill. Justus' fifth kill of the opening set gave the Rams the 25-22 win.

The Rams led by as many as four points (10-6) in the second set, but the Cougars would score eight of the next 10 points to move ahead by two (14-12). After three straight Philadelphia points put the Rams back in front 16-15, the Cougars outscored the Rams 10-3 to close out the set. The loss snapped a streak of 13 consecutive set victories.

With the third set tied at nine, Wensel recorded three service aces during a run of four straight Rams points to give Philadelphia a 13-9 cushion. Caldwell was able to only get back within two points (15-13, 16-14, 18-16). Wensel got hot toward the end of the set, posting four kills to help the Rams build a set-high six-point lead (23-17).

Philadelphia took control of the deciding set with a 6-1 run to grab a 15-11 lead on a Caldwell attack error. After the Cougars trimmed the gap to 15-14, the Rams rattled off eight of the next 11 points to widen the margin to 23-17 and close out the match.

Taryn Auyong had 14 kills and 15 digs to lead the Cougars (7-5, 0-2 CACC), while Katrina Janssen racked up 14 kills.

Philadelphia heads to Wilmington (Del.) for a CACC clash on Tuesday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m.
